Invite Author Dayna Hilton and Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog into your classroom or library to video chat via Skype!

Teachers~

Imagine your students meeting a real fire safety dog!

Invite Author Dayna Hilton and Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog into your classroom or library to video chat via Skype!

During this fun, educational one hour program, your students will meet a real fire safety dog, listen to Firefighter Dayna read one of her children’s fire safety books, sing fire safety songs along with Sparkles and be sworn in as Jr. Firefighters by Sparkles and Firefighter Dayna!

Want to know how Sparkles became a fire safety dog or what a typical day is like at the fire station? The program will also include a question and answer time in which your students can ask these questions and more!

Have special needs? We can help meet those needs! Your presentation will be adapted to the age of your students so that appropriate fire safety educational messages will be shared. If multiple classes are grouped together for a presentation, it is suggested that the students are close in age.

The one hour program includes:

• Introduction of Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog
• Sparkles’ story via Power Point
• Video of Sparkles demonstrating how to crawl low under smoke
• Selected reading
• Singing of fire safety song
• Jr. Firefighter Oath
• Q & A

Students will learn four valuable fire safety messages that will help keep them
and their family fire safe. These messages include:

• Recognizing the firefighter as a helper and a friend
• Knowing the sound and purpose of a smoke alarm
• Understanding the importance of practicing a home fire drill using an escape map
• Knowing when and how to crawl low under smoke

Contact Firefighter Dayna and Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog to work with you to create a custom program to suit your needs. For available dates and fees, please contact Hilton. More information is also available on their
Skype an Author site.

Learning to Draw with Art Coach Sandra Angelo

Ever since I was little, I have loved to draw. The only problem is that I am not very good at it!

Even though I have two degrees; one in art and one in communications, you wouldn't know that I have one it art as I tend to draw very simple figures.

Over the years, I have met some of the most amazing people on Facebook, and Sandra Angelo is one of them. An incredible artist that I really look up to, she has a passion for drawing and teaching others to become artists.

I contacted Sandra several months ago and shared with her that I would like to be able to draw pictures of Sparkles to help support the work of the Keep Kids Fire Safe Foundation. I had two big challenges facing me~ One is that I tend to be a perfectionist and the other is the lack of time for any "down time" due to our very busy schedule (I am a volunteer who works 14-16 hour days on fire safety projects).

After visiting with Sandra, I realized that her program was perfect for me, and without further hesitation, I signed up to take Sandra's 90 Day Home Study Course, "Draw PETS 101."

In Sandra's first book, she talked about the importance of spending at least 30 minutes a day on art and shared arts therapeutic value. I loved the concept, but was in the middle of our Midwest Fire Safety Tour. It seemed like I kept putting this project off because I was "too busy" or maybe even a bit scared that I would like this drawing so much that it would take me away from what I love to do. Not true I later learned!

Over the past few days, I finally committed myself to begin reading Sandra's books and finally got to put Sandra's teachings into when I got to Book Four.

Today's project was "Draw the Dog's Eye." I don't know about you, but I love starting "small" and this activity was just right!

I started out by drawing the outline of the eye first and have to admit that I was so nervous that the pencil was shaking!

After I got into the "groove" of drawing, I was starting to have fun and actually enjoyed it! It was very relaxing!

Here is a picture of my finished assignment. Sandra's drawing is on the top, and mine is on the bottom:

I am looking forward to the challenge and spending many more relaxing days drawing!

Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog and Firefighter Dayna to Share Fire Safety Tips on Sprout®

Yesterday Sprout released this press release!

SPROUT® CELEBRATES NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION WEEK WITH AWARD-WINNING FIREFIGHTER DAYNA HILTON AND SPARKLES THE FIRE SAFETY DOG

Week-Long Event on Sprout's Sunny Side Up Show Sponsored by State Farm® to Feature Exclusive, New CG-Animated Episodes of Fireman Sam™, Fire Safety Tips and More !

Philadelphia, PA – September 22, 2009 – /PRNewswire/ — Sprout, the first 24-hour preschool destination available on TV, on demand and online for kids ages 2-5 and their parents and caregivers, will celebrate National Fire Prevention Week on The Sunny Side Up Show with games, activities, crafts and preschool-friendly fire safety tips from award-winning firefighter Dayna Hilton and her trained Dalmatian, Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog. Sponsored by State Farm, this special themed week on the live Sunny Side Up Show begins on Monday, October 5 at 9:00 a.m. E.T. and will also feature exclusive, new CG-animated episodes of Fireman Sam™.
Dayna and Sparkles will share fire safety tips such as:

· Get Low and Go – If you see or smell smoke, drop on all fours…the air is cleaner and cooler down by the floors…get low and go!
· Change Your Batteries – Time for change! The reason is safety. The fall season is when families change batteries in their smoke alarms again.
· Be Smart Before Fires Start – To stay safe, here's something you can do… stay away from hot things that can hurt you. Be smart before fires start!

"Illustrating simple, informative and life-saving messages in a fun and memorable way is what helps saves lives," said Dayna Hilton, firefighter, author and recipient of the 2009 National Fire Protection Association Educator of the Year Award. "Children under the age of five are more vulnerable to injury or death in a fire emergency than any other age group, so it's never too soon to start teaching your kids about fire safety."

"We're excited to be joining forces with Firefighter Dayna and our sponsor State Farm to share these important fire safety messages on Sprout," said Andrew Beecham, senior vice president of programming at Sprout. "Sprout is all about creating a fun, interactive experience for parents and kids to share together, so it's great when we have an opportunity to produce a noteworthy themed week like this on our live Sunny Side Up Show."

National Fire Prevention Week on Sprout wouldn't be complete without Fireman Sam, the Ultimate Hero Next Door. Fireman Sam has recently undergone a significant program refresh with the launch of this all new CG animated television series that features new characters, new seaside destinations and daring new rescue missions. Based in the picturesque town of Pontypandy, where they never seem to have a quiet day, Fireman Sam is often called to the rescue. Each episode communicates a valuable lesson for children regarding fire safety and social responsibility for the community. The new CG-animated episodes of Fireman Sam debuted exclusively in the US on Sprout this September.
